VicTeach online meet-up

A VicTeach meet-up focussed on teaching at Red. This meet-up was for the VicTeach community to ask each other questions, share advice, and brainstorm together as we approached our first Trimester 1 at the Red Light of the Covid-19 Traffic Light System. All professional and academic staff with an interest in teaching and learning were invited to attend.

Learning Analytics Hub

We have started a VicTeach Learning Analytics Hub. At the kick-off event on 18 March we discussed what potential learning analytics has for teaching and learning practice and research at Te Herenga Waka.

If you'd like to join the Learning Analytics hub and contribute to the development of an exciting new initiative, email Irina Elgort and Allan Sylvester.

All professional and academic staff with an interest in teaching and learning are very welcome. There are currently monthly meetings and a Teams site.

The classroom as a metaphorical canoe—engaging with Pasifika learners

Drawing on our own experiences as Pasifika peoples in tertiary spaces and Teresia Teaiwa’s foundational work “The Classroom as a Metaphorical Canoe”, the Pasifika Student Success team alongside some Pasifika students facilitated a talanoa focused on engagement with Pasifika learners.

The metaphorical canoe is an important image as it shows that tertiary study and gaining qualifications is a journey rather than a destination. Further, it establishes both staff and students as equal navigators and paddlers.

As the fastest-growing young population in New Zealand, it is increasingly important to not only engage with Pasifika learners, but to engage well. So this talanoa highlighted the ways we can work collaboratively to ensure we are all paddling in the same direction.

Work Integrated and Career Learning Hub

We have started a VicTeach Work Integrated and Career Learning Hub. We envision bringing together a broad range of professional and academic staff already working in this space or with an interest in it. The hub will allow us to share questions, ideas, and tips about WIL and career learning.

At the launch on 14 September, we shared our thinking in proposing this hub, its connection to other WIL or related groups and activities at the university, and discussed how the hub will run.

If you'd like to join the Work Integrated and Career Learning hub and contribute to the development of an exciting new initiative, email Alice Hodder and Hazel Godfrey.

All professional and academic staff with an interest in teaching and learning are very welcome. There are currently regular meetings and a Teams site.

VicTeach social: conversational tables

This year Ako Symposium gave us a wonderful opportunity for māwhitiwhiti – stitching together ideas about pedagogy, finding connections and looking forward.

In that spirit, VicTeach invited everyone to continue connecting, with conversations around three assessment themes: (1) assessment FOR not OF learning; (2) ungrading; and (3) supporting ‘feedback literacy’.

Rather than structure the event around presentations on the themes, we trialled a ‘conversational table’ format. We offered a breakout room for each topic and attendees were free to join one or more of these, with a rapporteur assigned to each table for immediate summary at the end of the event.

28/29 November – 2 December

VicTeach Retreat

VicTeach was once again happy to be able to support a teaching-focused research and writing retreat on the Kāpiti Coast.

Event Timing: 28/29 November – 2 December 2022.
Event Venue : Waihōanga River Lodge and Retreat, Ōtaki Forks
Contact: Natalie Smith, natalie.smith@vuw.ac.nz

This retreat was open to professional, academic and teaching staff who are passionate about teaching and the student experience. It was an opportunity to explore and develop teaching-related research (relevant to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) and/ or to spend dedicated time working on a teaching-related project, such as a new course development or design. While the retreat primarily provided space and time for dedicating writing and thinking time, there were also opportunities to use other spaces on site for parallel workshops and discussions around common topics of interest.
