This course explores the role of HRM in promoting wellbeing in the workplace. Topics concern health and safety generally, and specific problems such as workplace bullying, harassment, stress and accidents. Effective preventative steps, and interventions, are also addressed. The course is primarily focussed on psychosocial factors in the workplace.

About this course
This course teaches job design and HRM practices that manage workplace wellbeing issues. It addresses threats to wellbeing such as workplace bullying, harassment, shiftwork and poor leadership. It also addreses drivers that enahnce aspects of wellbeing such as good job design.
Course learning objectives
Students who pass this course will be able to:
Explain the influences which shape wellbeing in the workplace, and threats to it;
Analyse and critically evaluate HRM practices and their impact on wellbeing at work;
Apply HRM knowledge to improve wellbeing and address harm in the workplace;
Effectively communicate HRM ideas and arguments to stakeholders.
How this course is taught
In 2025 this course is delivered on campus.
Lectures are in person, on campus. Lectures are recorded and are available for up to two weeks after delivery. Lecture recordings are intended as a useful supplement to learning but not as a full substitute for lecture attendance. Overseas and distant students - please contact the course co-ordinator and tutor so that you are supported to do well.
Lectures will not be livestreamed.
Tutorials have both on campus and Zoom options.
The course assessment does require on-campus attendance. Note that there is an in-person written exam in the exam period (date TBC ). Distant and overseas students unable to attend should contact the the school.

- Proposal and problem analysis Mark: 20%
- Quizzes x 3 Mark: 15%
- Mark: 35%
- Consultancy report Mark: 30%
