This course provides students with an understanding of the inter-relationships between physical activity, exercise, fitness and sport in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally. The course introduces the current physical activity guidelines and how participation varies across population groups. Students will develop skills in applying both mātauranga Māori and non-Indigenous methods to assessing physical activity and its association with hauora and wellbeing.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. Define the diverse concepts of physical activity, exercise, fitness, sport, hauora and wellbeing from an Aotearoa New Zealand treaty-based perspective.

  2. Describe the guidelines for physical activity that aim to promote equitable outcomes in hauora and wellbeing in different population groups.

  3. Apply conventional and mātauranga Māori methods for physical activity measurement and its association with hauora and wellbeing.

How this course is taught

This course is delivered on campus and face-to-face attendance is important, but video recordings of lectures will be available for students who miss these unavoidably. 
1 x 2 hr lecture each week  
1 x 2 hr tutorial every second week - starting in week 2
