Victoria University of Wellington scholarships

Many scholarships are available for students at Victoria University of Wellington, through the Scholarships Office.

The office maintains the Scholarships Database, a comprehensive searchable database listing all available scholarships with criteria, value, tenure and closing dates. Most application forms can be downloaded from this database. For best results when searching the database, keep the search terms broad.

The office also welcomes enquiries from students and staff. Please contact us by email or drop in to 10 Kelburn Parade between 8.00 am and 4.30 pm.

Antarctic Research Centre scholarships

The S.T. Lee Travel Award, the Endowed Development Fund and the Arnold Heine Antarctic Research Award are available for students with Antarctic research interests.

Impacts of Australian bushfires on New Zealand glacial environments PhD Scholarship

Deadline for applications: 30 September 2021

PhD project: The effect of Australian bushfire aerosols on albedo and melting rates in New Zealand glacial systems. The aim of this project is to quantify the effect of light-absorbing impurities (LAI) from Australian bushfire aerosols and microbial communities on the energy balance of New Zealand glacial systems. Impurities can significantly reduce the albedo (reflectivity) of glaciers and snow-covered areas, and can therefore increase the amount of absorbed energy and melt. In this part of the project, we will quantify the changes in albedo that are caused by the different LAIs, using a combination of controlled field experiments and modeling. The modeling will include both, process modeling of LAI effects on albedo, as well as modeling of NZ glacial systems and their sensitivity to changes in impurities in the future.

Greenhouse Gas Modelling PhD Studentship

Deadline for applications: 30 September 2021

PhD project: This is a three-year PhD scholarship, at Victoria University of Wellington, on measurements and modelling of atmospheric greenhouse gases at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand.  The student project will focus on using atmospheric models to infer New Zealand’s CO2 emissions and carbon uptake by our forests and surrounding ocean from atmospheric data at a growing network of sites. This PhD project is part of the recently-funded CarbonWatchNZ research programme to establish a national-scale world-leading greenhouse gas measurement and modelling system.

Southern Ocean Carbon Cycle PhD Studentship

Deadline for applications: 30 September 2021

PhD project: This is a three-year PhD scholarship, at Victoria University of Wellington, oceanic and atmospheric model simulations to interpret observations of CO2, 14CO2 and other gases and isotopes collected on ship voyages through the Southern Ocean and at observing sites in Aotearoa New Zealand and Antarctica. Student will be based at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand. This PhD project is part of the Antarctic Science platform, a major New Zealand government funded research programme that supports a range of physical and biological research to understand Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
