Abstract

As the world’s largest archipelagic state with a large and highly diverse population and a developing economy, Indonesia’s foreign policy is primarily driven by domestic dynamics and priorities. Strategically located at the crossroads of the Indo-Pacific region and as the largest country in South East Asia, Indonesia sees ASEAN as the cornerstone of its foreign policy, critical for ensuring harmony between its members and for managing relations with larger external powers. In her 2018 Sir Howard Kippenberger lecture, Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar will discuss the evolution of Indonesia’s approach to foreign policy, from “sailing between two reefs” during the Cold War to the challenge of “navigating in turbulent oceans” in today’s more complex contemporary global and regional order.
