In 1923, Walter Benjamin published “Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers”, a seminal essay in which he articulates his translation theory in elusive propositions. To explain some of the concepts Benjamin advances, this project explores Benjamin’s theoretical influences and other works he wrote. Pure language arises as the most important and challenging idea in his theory of translation, a metaphysical concept with strong theological foundations. A discussion on the conceptual origins of pure language, combined with an exploration of Benjamin’s thoughts on history, will lay out the theoretical basis for a practical interpretation of Benjamin’s theory of translation.
