History and purpose

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage Māori postgraduate study in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington offers Māori Graduate Awards to those Māori students about to begin their postgraduate (by coursework) studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand Māori students.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be studying full time in one of BSc (Hons) in AIML or DATA; Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI), Master of Data Science (MDataSc); Part 1 for MSc in AIML or DATA at Victoria University of Wellington.

Applicants must be of Māori descent.

Selection criteria

  • Applicants are expected to have achieved a minimum B+ grade average (GPA 6.0) at 300-level. Awards will be based on academic merit and personal statements.
  • All offers of the scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient completing all prerequisite course requirements and being fully enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington in a full-year programme by the start of Trimester 1 in the following year in at least 90 points of coursework in either BSc (Hons) in AIML or DATA; Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI), Master of Data Science (MDataSc); Part 1 for MSc in AIML or DATA

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Decisions will be made by the (Centre for) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Executive Committee.

The scholarship will be paid as a contribution towards accommodation or tuition fees.

Conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  1. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  1. Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
  1. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  1. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  1. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  1. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  1. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
