Artificial Intelligence
We are currently working on two projects related to the use of Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence: Assurance model
We advised the Government Chief Digital Officer on the need for and scope of an assurance model for use of AI in the public sector.
Read the scoping work on this project.
We continue to work with them on the development of the model.
Trialling the use of Copilot to help public servants to draft replies to letters received by Ministers
We are working with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to explore how best to use Copilot to help draft replies to letters that are received by Ministers. The project is due to be completed by the end of March 2026. Many important findings are emerging, for example the development of different approaches to use of Copilot depending on the experience and subject matter knowledge.
Artificial Intelligence: Expert Panel
The AI Expert Advisor Panel was set up by the Government Chief Digital Officer (GCDO) in June 2025. Comprised of leading academics and experts from the public and private sectors, the panel's role is to provide specialist and technical expertise and advise the GCDO on adopting AI responsibly to modernise public services and deliver better outcomes for all New Zealanders.
The panel has three primary responsibilities in relation to the safe and responsible adoption and use of AI in the Public Service:
- Providing advice to the GCDO.
- Supporting the GCDO in communication and engagement.
- Supporting the GCDO to connect to the wider AI community.
The Policy Hub is proud to be acting in the role of secretariat for this panel.
