Degree: Bachelor of Arts majoring in Pacific Studies and Tourism

A second year Bachelor of Arts student majoring in Pacific Studies and Film is one of the University’s key rugby league players, as well as a hard-working student.

Robin Yates, who is half Samoan, plays for the Victoria University of Wellington Hunters Rugby League Club, which won the Premier Competition last season.

“Playing rugby league gives me the break I need and helps me clear my mind,” says Robin.

A challenge he has faced during his studies is time management but, he says, the club is flexible when he needs time off to complete assignments. “It’s good because a lot of my team mates and people at the club have graduated and are always helpful,” he says.

Robin’s Samoan mother has ensured that he maintains his Samoan identity, and he carries his mother’s maiden name, Iakopo, as his middle name. “My mum wanted her culture to continue through her children so that is part of the reason why today I am at the University taking Pacific Studies. My culture is always going to be a part of me and makes me the person I am today.”

His mother’s village is Vaisala, Savai’i. “My grandma and uncles still live in the same house my mum grew up in. I have visited once when I was 14 and plan to visit again soon.”

Robin says the University has given him the opportunity to learn and grow as a person. “It’s a great place to meet new people. I encourage new students to take time for study, turn up to all classes and give it 100 percent.”

Robin’s dream job is to work in the film industry.
