Keen interest in Wellington University COVID-19 scholarship

There has been strong interest in the free tuition Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington is offering to people affected by COVID-19.

Over 2,500 people expressed an interest in the University’s Trimester 2 fees scholarship, which covers 100 percent of tuition fees for Trimester 2 study, and is available to people whose work and life has been disrupted by the global pandemic.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford says the fees scholarships is an important way in which the University can support people whose lives have unexpectedly changed over the last few months.

“We are conscious of the devastating impact COVID-19 has had on New Zealand and the world. Offering these scholarships is a way for the University to reach out to people who have lost their job, been forced home from overseas or find themselves in changed circumstances.”

When the scholarship was announced in mid-March, Professor Guilford said that at times of crisis, universities have an important role to play as inclusive institutions where learning flourishes and new beginnings are possible.

“With many New Zealanders adjusting to living life during a pandemic, it’s wonderful to see so many turning to education and choosing to study in Wellington.”

Recipients of the fees scholarship will begin their studies at Wellington University on Monday 13 July.
