End-of-life care

This component assesses the accessibility, timeliness, and quality of end-of-life care provided to Māori and Pacific patients. It will also explore how community- or hospice-based end-of-life care services can best meet the needs of Māori and Pacific patients with colorectal cancer

Palliative care is a cornerstone of optimal care for people facing life-limiting illness. However, there is limited research on how best to orient hospice care to meet the needs of Māori or Pacific peoples. This study addresses this gap using a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data, to develop actionable recommendations

This study includes:

an online survey of hospice staff to understand the implementation of Mauri Mate, the Māori Palliative Care Framework of Hospice New Zealand.
fono/Hui with Māori and Pacific hospice staff, decision- and policy-makers, and other professional stakeholders, to explore their perspectives on hospice-based or community-based hospice end-of-life care.
interviews with Māori and Pacific people who have who have engaged with or utilised hospice-based or community-based hospice end-of-life care, to understand their experiences and perspectives.
