Teacher Excellence Awards 2026
Celebrating Te Whānau o Akopai—School of Education’s annual Teacher Education Excellence Awards
The Teacher Education Excellence Awards, a highlight of the academic year, bring together students and academics from across our initial teacher education programmes to celebrate the achievements of our graduating student teachers. This annual event provides a valuable opportunity for our community to come together and recognise a shared commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.
The awards recognise exceptional achievement across both academic study and practicum experience. They reflect the capability, commitment, and readiness of our graduating class to enter the teaching profession. Award recipients exemplify the knowledge, skill, and dedication required to make a positive impact in classrooms and communities.
Teaching is one of the most visible and closely discussed professions in Aotearoa New Zealand, given its foundational role in shaping the learning, development, and wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi.
Professor Sue Cherrington, Head of School, Te Whānau o Akopai, says:
“The impact of high-quality teaching extends far beyond the classroom—it strengthens communities and helps shape the future. The Teacher Education Excellence Awards not only recognise individual achievement, but also affirm the importance of teaching at the highest level—acknowledging those who are already making a difference and inspiring the next generation of educators.”
