Leading the way in Artificial Intelligence

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington will be offering the first undergraduate major in Artificial Intelligence in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines that sense, act, and learn from experience, to perform tasks for humans.

It’s not just one thing. AI is all around us—in your car, gaming, online shopping, and social media. There are many life-changing AI applications.

“AI can make a huge difference in people’s lives. It can be applied to many areas to solve real-world problems across diverse areas like healthcare, finance, and the environment,” says Professor Bing Xue, Deputy Head of the School of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.

The new AI major will provide students with knowledge of AI concepts, techniques, and tools. They will learn how to apply that knowledge to solve problems, combined with programming skills that will enable them to build software tools incorporating AI technology that will help shape the future.

Students studying AI at Te Herenga Waka will be taught by academics from our internationally renowned Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning research group—one of the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The new major can be done as a three-year Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Artificial Intelligence, and can be combined with other relevant disciplines, such as biology, health, or the environment. Students can also pair the AI major with a Computer Science major or a Data Science major, giving them strong technical skills in AI that could be applied in a wide range of application areas.

This new major is designed to open doors for graduates to exciting opportunities nationally and around the world.

“There has been an increase in the adoption of AI technologies globally, and a growing demand for people who can apply AI techniques to address a wide range of problems,” Professor Bing Xue says.

After completing their degree, graduates will have a wide variety of career options, such as AI scientist, business consultant, AI architect, data-analyst, machine learning engineer, robotic scientist and many more. They will also have the option to further their study through the University’s Master of Artificial Intelligence.
