The NZ Contemporary China Research Centre undertakes to provide a public forum on NZ relations with China through its China Symposia Programme. We hope this China Symposium can be a useful platform for discussion and debate among scholars, policy makers in the public sector and practitioners in the private sector on China related issues that have significant implications for NZ. The 2010 China Symposium in April adopted the key theme of the 2010 Conference, by addressing both China and India as emerging business markets.

As rapidly rising economic powers, China and India continue to play a major role in the global economy and world trade. For small economies like New Zealand, there are substantial opportunities to increase economic engagement with these nations through trade and investment in high value sectors, such as services.

This symposium provided a platform for discussion and debate about the prospects for increased economic activity by New Zealand in China and India. It specifically addressed the question of how New Zealand and New Zealand firms can improve the level of engagement and performance in these markets, particularly in high-value sectors, such as services and service-related industries. The symposium commenced with an overview of a FRST-funded Victoria University of Wellington research project on services internationalization into Asia, with a focus on China and India and was followed by a panel discussion addressing the issues relating to New Zealand’s opportunities in these markets.

The panel featured expert input from the New Zealand business community, government sector, and academics from NZ and international universities.
