Working Title

Evaluate the dynamic response of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to AMOC collapse

Supervisors

Project objectives and description

This PhD thesis aims to provide quantitative estimates of the timescale and total ice volume change in response to AMOC collapse of individual Antarctic ice sheet basins. To isolate the AMOC-specific signal, outputs from GCM-forced simulations will be compared with preindustrial control simulations. The analysis will focus in particular on how these influences are expressed through ice sheet surface mass balance, basal melt rates, and the associated dynamic response of individual ice drainage basins. Moreover, by incorporating ocean forcing from both eddy-permitting and non-eddying simulations, the study will also assess how the representation of mesoscale ocean processes alters the delivery of heat to ice shelf margins.
