December 2025 update

The University has confirmed its decision to demolish the Gordon Wilson and McLean Flats at 320 The Terrace.

Following changes to legislation earlier this year, work has been underway to explore and consider our options for 320 The Terrace. We have assessed the costs and benefits of refurbishment, and engaged with stakeholders and the local community.

The University has confirmed its decision to demolish the Gordon Wilson Flats and the McLean Flats at 320 The Terrace.

A major factor in the decision is the ongoing risk the flats present to the community as the buildings are earthquake-prone, dangerous, and have deteriorated over the last decade. It is also not financially viable to refurbish the existing structures, which suffer from extensive rot, asbestos, seismic issues, and other critical problems.

While there is more to do to realise our vision, this marks the beginning of a process that will enable us to provide warm, affordable, and sustainable student accommodation at meaningful scale. This decision is a significant milestone for our university and our students, and a positive step forward for the future of our city.
