Science in Society offers undergraduate and postgraduate study options that encourage critical thinking about the role of science in society.

Studying science in society allows you to explore the relationship between science, scientists, society, Mātauranga Māori, the history of science, and science communication. Our programmes provide an opportunity to learn about science and the scientific process, explore effective science communication, and gain critical perspectives on the role of science in society.

If you wish to specialise in science communication, we offer an undergraduate major—the only one in New Zealand—and postgraduate study options.

Science in Society staff bring a range of practical and research expertise to their teaching, including science and technology studies, science communication and engagement, science-art collaborations, history of science and Mātauranga Māori. We also have strong ties across relevant sectors, especially in Wellington, including central and local government, museums, NGOs and Crown Research Institutes.

Studying Science in Society

You can study science in society and science communication through several different pathways. A background in science is not necessarily required.

• Undergraduate: We offer an undergraduate minor in science in society, an undergraduate major and minor in science communication, and many of our courses can be taken as electives in other programmes.
• Taught postgraduate: We offer a one-year Master of Science in Society, a science communication specialisation within the Master of Communication, and some of our postgraduate courses can be taken electives through other programmes.
• Postgraduate research: We also welcome students who are interested in Master of Science (Science in Society) and PhD research degrees.
