Professor Lisa Marriott appointed Dean, Faculty of Graduate Research

Professor Lisa Marriott from the Wellington School of Business and Government has been appointed to the role of Dean, Faculty of Graduate Research (FGR).

Professor Lisa Marriott
Currently a professor of taxation in the School of Accounting and Commercial Law, Lisa joined Te Herenga Waka in 2011. She teaches advanced level courses on taxation and policy in the New Zealand context. Social justice is at the heart of her research, which focuses on equal treatment around taxation, pensions, and sentences for financial crimes in Aotearoa. A well-respected voice in academic circles, Lisa is involved in many cross-disciplinary projects and enjoys close working relationships with colleagues from across other universities.

Lisa is an extraordinary professor at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand. Lisa is currently co-PI on a Royal Society Marsden grant looking at what a Te Tiriti affirming tax system could look like and has previously been awarded a Research Excellence Award from Te Herenga Waka. She sits on two journal editorial boards and the Education Board of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand.

Outlining her vision for FGR, Lisa says, “FGR is a team of highly dedicated and skilled professional and academic staff, who look after the needs of our research graduate students. I am excited about working with them and contributing to the continued development of a supportive and diverse research community. I am also looking forward to working with colleagues throughout the University to strengthen the postgraduate research experience and help foster a culture in which emerging researchers can thrive”.

Lisa takes over from Professor Neil Dodgson, who has been Dean of FGR since 2019. Neil will return to being Professor of Computer Graphics. He will be taking a year's Research and Study Leave, including a period as Visiting Fellow at Emmanuel College in the University of Cambridge.

Lisa will begin as Dean of FGR on 15 September 2026.
