Celebrating the first graduates of an important joint training partner

On Wednesday 11 June 2025, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) held a special graduation ceremony for the first cohort from the joint Bachelor of Communication programme with the Communication University of Zhejiang (CUZ).

This special event marked the completion of a remarkable journey for the students who joined the programme in 2021. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Averil Coxhead, Dean of FHSS, alongside Angela Joe, Associate Dean International, teaching staff from the Faculty, and staff members from the International Office and Chinese Embassy. The event celebrated the achievements of the 14 CUZ students who transferred to Wellington in 2024 to complete their Bachelor of Communication degree.

The joint programme, a Bachelor of Communication majoring in Intercultural Communication and minoring in Asian Studies, was established through a joint training programme agreement signed between CUZ and VUW in 2020. Officially approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2021, the programme offers students opportunities for cross-cultural learning and academic development, preparing them to become effective intercultural communicators in a global context.

Professor Coxhead delivered a heartfelt graduation speech, highlighting the students' resilience and growth."Since 2021, you have demonstrated leadership and courage as the first intake of the CUZ–VUW joint programme.

“Many of you studied online for two years during the Covid-19 pandemic before finally joining us in Wellington in 2023. You have embraced new challenges, navigated cultural differences, and developed the confidence and skills to become true intercultural citizens. We are proud of your journey and your success."

Professor Coxhead also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of CUZ colleagues and the dedication of VUW academic and professional staff who supported the students throughout their studies. She emphasised the strength of the partnership and the high level of trust between the two universities.

Looking ahead, the relationship between CUZ and VUW continues to grow. In July 2025, a second cohort of 17 CUZ students is expected to transfer to Wellington to continue their studies. Both universities are also exploring additional articulation agreements, including a dual master’s degree in Intercultural Communication, which will provide even more students the opportunity to pursue postgraduate study at the University.

This graduation not only celebrates the academic achievements of these students but also marks the beginning of a long-lasting international partnership with CUZ—one that fosters intercultural understanding and global citizenship.
