Te Herenga Waka strengthens Pacific connections through new partnership with the Université de la Polynésie française

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington has deepened its commitment to regional collaboration through the signing of a new framework agreement with the University of French Polynesia (Université de la Polynésie française—UPF), a key partner in the Nārua project.

Signed on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, the agreement represents a significant milestone in advancing research and education partnerships across the Pacific. It lays the foundation for long-term, mutually beneficial collaboration between the two institutions and paves the way for broader engagement with academic partners involved in the Nārua project—fostering rich cultural and regional synergies.

The framework includes a focus on research collaboration, student exchange and study abroad opportunities, alongside the development of joint academic programmes and modules in areas such as sustainability, public policy, and the Blue Economy. These initiatives aim to enhance the regional relevance and innovation of educational offerings while supporting capacity-building across the Pacific.

Reflecting the shared commitment of both institutions to sustainability, the signing ceremony was held virtually. VUW Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Logan Bannister and UPF President Professor Patrick Capolsini formally signed the agreement during an online meeting attended by senior leaders and representatives from both universities.
This agreement builds on a longstanding relationship between VUW and UPF, which dates back to their first formal collaboration in 1992.

In March 2025, VUW hosted a delegation from UPF, including President Professor Patrick Capolsini, UPF staff, and representatives from the Nārua project. The visit marked another important milestone in the partnership and was warmly welcomed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Nic Smith, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students) Dr Logan Bannister, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori and Kaitiakitanga) Professor Rawinia Higgins, members of the International Office, and representatives from across VUW’s schools and faculties.

Together, UPF and VUW continue to foster a vibrant academic partnership grounded in shared values, student mobility, and research excellence—contributing to a stronger and more connected Pacific region.
