Starting our students’ days right with a free breakfast

When money is tight, breakfast can fall to the bottom of your priority list. But students of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington can count on at least one free breakfast a week.

“Students are struggling to afford their basic needs in this cost-of-living crisis. Giving students breakfast won’t resolve this issue, but it will make a difference for a student who is otherwise going without that morning,” says Jessica Ye, President of VUWSA.

The University’s Property Services team has partnered with VUWSA since May to provide student breakfasts on a Wednesday at Kelburn campus during the winter months. Property Services Director, David Stevenson, has also encouraged our University contractors to sponsor a breakfast.

“It’s been great to have Living Pā contractors L.T. McGuinness, our cleaners OCS and other service contractors sponsor breakfasts so far. It also allows them to spend a couple of hours serving breakfast to students and getting to know them. It has also meant my team can also get involved and do something simple to support our students,” says Mr Stevenson.

“Some have been curious as to why the Property Services team is leading this initiative, but we all have or know students currently attending University, and we understand the financial pressures on them. This is a way we can do something simple to support them.”

The free breakfasts are served every Wednesday on Kelburn campus, with students at Te Aro campus being served regular breakfast on a Thursday, and Pipitea being provided for most weeks with help from the Law and Commerce student societies on a Tuesday.

“Students have been surprised that there is breakfast on campus for free, they’ve naturally been grateful,” says Jessica. “It’s an initiative that aims to promote student wellbeing and a sense of community.”

The regular menu includes toast, cereals, and hot drinks. The fortnightly sponsored breakfasts also include porridge, fruit, and yoghurt. “A special thanks goes to Milk & Honey proprietor Paul Carmichael for his help in supplying the breakfast foods at cost and cooking the porridge,” says Mr Stevenson.

The next sponsored breakfast will be on 9 August and will be sponsored by Aquaheat. The free breakfasts will continue until the end of Trimester 2. Check the University Instagram and Facebook channels, and VUWSA Facebook and Instagram each week for times and venues.
