Poukairangi (Māori) – Associate Dean (Māori) appointed to Te Wāhanga Tātai Hauora -Wellington Faculty of Health

Dr Clive Aspin has accepted the role of inaugural Poukairangi (Māori)|Associate Dean Māori in the Faculty of Health.

This is the first Poukairangi (Māori) – Associate Dean (Māori) to be appointed at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Acting Dean Associate Professor Kathy Holloway says Dr Aspin has extensive experience working with Māori and other indigenous peoples.

“His wealth of knowledge and his mana will be real assets as he takes up this important role.

“I look forward to working with Clive as he grows this role in the Faculty, and in particular, in assisting the Faculty to meet its Te Tiriti obligations.”

Dr Aspin, recently the Acting Director of the Health Services Research Centre and currently senior lecturer in the School of Health, is a public health researcher who grew up in Hauraki where he has strong whakapapa connections to Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Whanaunga, and Ngāti Tamaterā.

He joined Te Herenga Waka in 2020 after a diverse career in secondary and tertiary education, government policy development, community-based health management, and academic research and teaching in New Zealand and Australia.

Dr Aspin says this is an exciting time to be at the forefront of driving change in Aotearoa.

“I am excited about working with my colleagues to make a real difference for Māori health. After several decades of working in Māori and indigenous health, I can see real opportunities to make a difference for our students, our whānau, and our communities, and I am excited about playing a part in that.”

Dr Aspin will hold the part-time role from August 24 until August 23, 2024.
