Next generation of world-changers arriving in Wellington

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s main orientation activities for new students kick off today.

The University held a welcome for international students last week and Sunday saw an influx of students moving into the University’s 15 halls of residence around the city in preparation for Orientation Week which begins today. This includes new students not living in a hall who are invited to be part of WGTN Hall, the ‘hall without walls’, which provides a range of social, cultural, and sporting opportunities for those new to the University.

“We also welcome back our returning students not just to our university, but to our wonderful city,” says Director Student and Academic Services Pam Thorburn.

“For new students this is a wonderful week of settling in and getting to know your hallmates and classmates, before classes begin on 2 March. It is also a chance to have fun in the city and enjoy what Wellington is about.

“We urge you to enjoy every moment of it but remember to look after yourself and those around you and stay safe.”

Ms Thorburn says the University sends its thoughts and support to students affected by current travel restrictions who are unable to get to Orientation Week. The University is working closely with these students, providing flexible start dates and access to recorded lectures, and ensuring they are well informed and supported.

Highlights of the week include an afternoon of live music by current students at the University’s Kelburn campus on Wednesday where new students vote for their favourite performers; and the annual Welcome Festival at Kelburn Park on Friday.

The Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association also has a busy week of events planned, including live music with Peking Duk, Drax Project, Allday & Deadbeat, and Benee.

“If you see a young face looking lost somewhere on the hills of Kelburn, reach out with a word of welcome and point them in the right direction,” suggests Ms Thorburn.

“We look forward to sharing our wonderful city with students from New Zealand and around the world.”
