Victoria’s Queen’s Birthday Honours recipients

A number of alumni and friends of Victoria University of Wellington have been recognised in the 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours.

Among those connected with Victoria University is Peter Haythornthwaite, who received an Honorary Doctorate from Victoria in 2012 and is a former Adjunct Professor of Design.

Mr Haythornthwaite, who has been recognised for his services to design, played a key role in devising and implementing the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Better by Design programme and the establishment of the Best Awards for New Zealand design.

Alumna Dame Karen Sewell has been made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to education.

Dame Karen has held a teaching fellowship in Victoria’s English department and was formerly an advisory board member for Victoria’s School of Government. She has had a fifty-year career in the education sector, and most recently has acted as a consultant to a number of education and governance activities.

Sir Matiu Te Rei, who graduated from Victoria in 2000, has been made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the Māori community, in health, education, economic development, culture and Treaty of Waitangi resolution.
