The transformative power of diagnosis

Delivering a diagnosis can destabilise a person's sense of his or herself and future potential, often as powerfully as the ailment itself. This study will explore how the delivery of serious diagnoses is depicted in literacy sources while simultaneously exploring the concurrent medical practices around diagnostic disclosure. We will weave together the literacy and historical threads to develop an understanding of the symbolic social position held by the naming of a disease.
