This course introduces students to the concepts and fundamentals of interactive visual perception through creative coding and AI for interactive interfaces. Students will develop their own visual, animated, multimedia and interactive design solutions to address an array of design problems.

About this course

This course introduces students to basic concepts of coding (programming), generative design and Artificial Intelligence. Students explore the fundamentals of visual perception, form, colour, motion and interaction through experimentation with digital technology.

DSDN 142 is an on-campus only course and is not available for distance study. This means all class sessions will be delivered in person at our Te Aro Campus. 

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. Situate their design, design thinking and design process within the context of introductory AI and creative coding.

  2. Resolve and implement design solutions using algorithmic and sequential processes and AI design strategies introduced in the course.

  3. Employ relevant (or required) formats/media to communicate design concepts, process, and analysis verbally, visually and in writing.

  4. Recognise and use strategies that enable self-assessment and critique in the development of independent work.

How this course is taught

DSDN 142 Lectures, studios and tutorials require in-person attendance. Lecture recordings will be made available in Nuku for subsequent revision. 

 

Assessment

  • Project 1: Composition Mark: 20%
  • Project 2: Data Mark: 30%
  • Project 3: Responsive Mark: 30%
  • Eight tasks (progress-based assessments, PBAs) that relate to specific project development or course learning objectives. These PBAs must be completed on the day and no extensions can be granted for this assessment. Mark: 20%
