About this course

This course focusses on acoustics, recording, editing and mixing for stereo applications. While the majority of this course will be delivered online, there is a recording session in the middle of the trimester that requires attendance. Details about this session will be posted in the first week of class.

Course learning objectives

Students who pass this course should be able to:

  1. understand and apply studio recording techniques competently

  2. use signal processing and Digital Audio Workstations proficiently in the context of studio production

  3. apply critical perspectives on key aspects of sound production technology.

How this course is taught

This course requires attendance for the some of its activities, for which there are no online alternatives.

  • Lectures and tutorials will be delivered online
  • A single recording session will require attendance; there will not be an online streaming or video option
  • Assessment can be submitted online

 

Assessment

  • Minor Assignment 1 Mark: 15%
  • Minor Assignment 2 Mark: 15%
  • Minor Assignment 3 Mark: 15%
  • Critical Essay Mark: 10%
  • Tests (3 tests, 5% each) Mark: 15%
  • Major Assignment Mark: 30%

In addition to achieving an overall pass mark of at least 50% students must:

  1. Students will need to attend the recording session associated with this offering. Students will need to provide a medical certificate for health-related absesnce.

What you’ll need to get

Students will be required to use Avid's Pro Tools software. Pro Tools is installed on our Keyboard Lab and Sonic Arts Lab computers for use in CMPO286, however for those interested in working remotely, it is recommended that students purchase a Pro Tools education licence for personal computer use. It is also recommended that students have their own headphones, as these are not provided by the university. Information about these options will be covered in the first week of class.
