About this course
An introduction to tikanga Māori (as Māori customary law) and related principles.
Course learning objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of the application of legal anthropology to the study of customary law in Aotearoa New Zealand;
describe the fundamental principles that underlie the Māori legal system;
demonstrate an understanding of tikanga Māori and its importance in the New Zealand state legal system;
show familiarity with key Māori legal concepts and practices;
demonstrate that they have considered the relationship between Māori law and the New Zealand state legal system (particularly through the examination of cases).
How this course is taught
This course is taught primarily through lectures. Students are expected to read the preparatory material and be prepared to discuss the issues in class.
Assessment
- Reflective Journal - Friday 5th September 2025 Mark: 30%
- Final essay - Monday 20th October 2025 Mark: 70%
