The 2024 WSBG Excellence Awards
Wellington School of Business and Government Excellence Awards for 2023's top-performing students were held on Wednesday 15 May at Rutherford House. A celebration of students across all of the faculty's schools, with both academic and donor-funded prize winners.
Professor Jane Bryson, Dean of Wellington School of Business and Government hosted the evening with Dr Ina Reichenberger, Deputy Associate Dean Students. The guest speaker for the evening was Katie Brown, CEO Te Ao Matihiko, and Founder of Social Good, a proudly Māori-owned business promoting the use of social media and digital communications for 'good'.
Professor Bryson welcomed students and graduates, academic and professional staff, friends, donors, and whanau and highlighted the hard work and commitment our award and prize winners have dedicated to their education and for which they were being recognised.
As the guest speaker for the evening, Katie Brown shared four important, and inspiring points in particular, all aimed towards graduates heading out into the workforce:
1. You now have your tools to do incredible work, it’s up to you to adapt them as technology and the market changes. You might not love your first or second job, but every role is valuable in honing your skills.
2. Your transferable skills are a superpower, wāhine especially, apply for the jobs where you don’t tick all the boxes. Show them what you bring and the difference you can make.
3. Bring your culture, values and ethics to every role you do. Please be proud of what makes you you. In this money-focused industry it is possible to carve out a career that honours your culture, values and ethics.
4. Nurture your connections and networks. The people alongside you will be our future leaders, decision makers and CEOs, building strong relationships now will serve you well in the future.
She finished by saying, "Your knowledge, perspective and contribution is valuable. Leaders, innovators and change makers of tomorrow - I can’t wait to see what you will do".
