The Marion Walton Scholarship in Psychological Science
History and purpose
This scholarship was established in 2025 by Marion Walton (a graduate of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington) with both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Psychology degree. The scholarship is intended to support students interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience, Forensic Psychology or Clinical Psychology.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must be enrolled or intending to enrol in a Master’s degree programme (either by thesis or coursework and thesis) in Psychological Science at Victoria University of Wellington, with a focus on one of the following areas:
- Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience
- Forensic Psychology
- Clinical Psychology.
Selection criteria
Selection will be made based on academic merit and financial hardship.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- A research proposal outlining the current or intended area of study or research.
- Applicants must complete the financial section of the application and provide supporting documents.

Selection will be made by the University Research Scholarships Committee.
Additional information
If the recipient is studying a Master of Science by thesis, the scholarship shall be split into two payments across the year. If the recipient is studying Master of Science by coursework and thesis, the annual stipend will be paid in equal four instalments over two years. Each payment will be made in equal instalments at the beginning of the trimester.
Recipients are expected to write a letter of appreciation to the donor, within one month of receiving the scholarship.
Recipients are also expected to provide an end of year progress report, that will be shared with the donor.
Conditions
- Eligibility requires applicants must be enrolled or accepted with intention to enrol in one of the listed Masters of Psychological Sciences programme at Victoria University.
- A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date for the application to be considered.
- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- Where part-time study for the recipient is approved, their scholarship award may be pro-rated. This decision will be made by the decision-making panel. Before the recipient decides to reduce their workload from full-time study, this must be discussed with the Scholarships Office.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
