Description

The scholarship is to assist in the education and training of postgraduate classical pianists studying at Te Kōkī the New Zealand School of Music, Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington.

History and purpose

This scholarship was established in 2023 through a bequest from David Philps Eade to assist classical pianists studying at Te Kōkī the New Zealand School of Music, Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington.

Who is eligible?

  • This scholarship will be open to classical piano students who are graduates of Te Kōkī the New Zealand School of Music. Applicants must be classical piano graduates entering postgraduate studies at the New Zealand School of Music.
  • Applicants to be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

Selection criteria

  • The applicants will be assessed on their performance they submit as part of the scholarship specific documentation outlined below.
  • Applicants must meet the Victoria University of Wellington Entry Requirements for International students before the scholarship can be awarded.

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Two references (to be requested via the online application) - can be one academic and one character.
  • Provide a web link to a recent performance (less than 6 months old) to include 30-40 minutes of programme of various styles.
  • A personal statement outlining future plans and how this scholarship can assist their future studies.

Selection process

The successful recipient will be selected by the Director of the New Zealand School of Music, the Head of Piano Studies and Diedre Irons (as delegated by the donor).

Additional information

  • Recipients must write a letter of thanks the family of the donor.
  • Recipients will be expected to perform in a concert honouring the memory of David P Eade.
  • If no suitable candidate is found for any category, the fund can be held or redistributed into other categories.
  • The scholarship is to cover stipend, and other activities that are related to piano studies at Te Kōkī theNew Zealand School of Music.
  • The tenure of the scholarship is one year with the right to reapply for subsequent years.
  • The recipient will be expected to demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of the New Zealand School of Music. This may include but is not limited to, participation in ensembles, presentations, or performances at NZSM or University events.

Conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
