History and purpose

This scholarship is funded by the Johnson Group, public sector recruitment specialists. The Johnson Group recruit public sector management, policy, human resources, communications and marketing roles, both permanent and contract. They anticipate trends, analyse government policy, and stay one step ahead of what employers and candidates need and expect.

As specialists in public policy, the Johnson Group wish to give back through a scholarship that will help a student to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Policy. The Group will also provide experiences and access to networks that will assist students into work after they graduate.

Who is eligible?

Applicants for this scholarship must be:

  • a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • applicants must be postgraduate student studying at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington
  • of Māori or Pasifika descent.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be awarded this scholarship based on their drive to progress in the field of public policy.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship-specific documentation

You will need to submit:

  • Reference (to be requested via the online application)
  • a second reference letter, in addition to the letter accompanying application for admission
  • a supporting statement detailing your passion and commitment to work in the field of public policy.

Selection process

A panel comprising the Academic Programme Lead, Public Policy, and at least one other programme academic.

Additional information

The successful recipient is expected to write a letter of appreciation to the donor within one month of receiving the award.

The Johnson Group will also work with the academic programme leader to provide career advice to students.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in 60 points within the tenure of the scholarship. No payment will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
