The Graduate Women Wellington (GWW) established this PhD scholarship to build knowledge and leadership to enhance the status of women in New Zealand.
History
Who is eligible?
The ideal candidate will be an exceptional woman who will make a significant contribution to the advancement of women's academic achievement in New Zealand. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute fully to the economic and social fabric and performance of the country through the knowledge contribution of her doctoral studies and her on-going leadership influence post completion.
Selection criteria
- Applicants will have an academic track record in a relevant discipline which gives confidence in her ability to make significant knowledge and practice contribution to improving outcomes for women.
- The scholarship is open to women (applicants must identify as female, including cis-gendered and trans-gendered) who are applying for an admission to Doctoral study or currently enrolled in Doctoral study at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. Preference will be given to applicants in fields of study where women are under-represented, women's human rights, women in leadership, higher education or in non-traditional careers.
- Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Students whose first language is not English are required to meet the English language proficiency requirements for postgraduate study at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington.
- Candidates will need to demonstrate how their research will enhance the status of women in New Zealand.
- The applicant must also demonstrate in their application how they intend to provide leadership in thinking and practice on the status of women during and on completion of their studies.
- Applicants will be expected to have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree with academic distinction
Application process
Applicants must meet the entry requirements for PhD study at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. Please refer to the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research.
New PhD applicants should complete the PhD Admission and Scholarship online application and clearly indicate they wish to apply for the Graduate Women Wellington - PhD Scholarship.
Please note, applicants may be requested to supply evidence of financial hardship if applicable, and any other documentation they wish to be considered by the committee, such as personal statements or character references, to assist their application.
Selection process
Selection will be made by the Scholarships Committee of Graduate Women Wellington (or nominated subcommittee).
Additional information
Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor of this scholarship.
The recipient is expected to attend a Graduate Women Wellington’s Branch meeting and carry out a three-minute presentation on their area of research.
Conditions
- Recipients are required to adhere to the relevant Wellington Doctoral Scholarship conditions and to sign a Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington Postgraduate Scholarship Contract.
- Recipients will also be required to provide milestone reports and updates to Graduate Women Wellington for use in publications and other marketing material.
- Recipients are to ensure that Graduate Women Wellington is acknowledged as a sponsor in any published material or presentation.
- The PhD scholarship is renewable annually subject to satisfactory progress and successful completion of academic requirements each year.
- If at any time Graduate Women Wellington considers a scholar to not be making satisfactory progress the scholarship may be suspended or terminated.
- Interim progress reports (3000 words or less) are required annually, and a final report is to be provided on completion of the scholarship. This will include an article suitable for publication.
- Scholars will also be required to deliver a presentation to the branch members at Graduate Women Wellington.
- A copy of the thesis will be made available to Graduate Women Wellington.
