Morgan Phoa Scholarships

Value: $47,500 NZD per annum for 3 years. The scholarship will cover full fees annually, with the remainder of the annual funding being paid as stipend in equal monthly instalments directly to the recipient.

History and purpose

Through the generosity of Dr Wesley Phoa and Margaret Morgan, two New Foundations PhD Scholarships have been established at the School of Mathematics and Statistics. These scholarships will enable two students, co-supervised by Dr Thomas Forster and Professor Noam Greenberg, to make new discoveries, advance our mathematical understanding, and expand our knowledge of Quine's New Foundations, capitalising upon recent breakthroughs in the field that the donors helped make possible.

Who is eligible?

We are seeking a highly motivated person with an excellent academic record, who is familiar with the basics of mathematical logic, in particular set theory.

The ideal candidate will have an Honours or Master's degree with an excellent GPA, background in mathematical logic, and excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Selection criteria

Selection will be based on:

  • academic merit,
  • having a background which aligns well with the research project, and
  • an expressed interest in the research area.

  • a personal statement describing their interest in this research,
  • and the names and contact details of two referees.

Decisions will be made by Dr Thomas Forster and Prof Noam Greenberg.

Additional information

  • The scholarship will cover full fees annually, with the remainder of the annual funding being paid as stipend in equal monthly instalments directly to the recipient.
  • A letter of thanks must be written within one month of receiving the scholarship and forwarded to the Development Office, to be shared with the donor.
  • A progress report must be submitted at the end of each year outlining the recipient’s progress and forwarded to the Development Office, to be shared with the donor.

Conditions

  1. A completed application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being enrolled in a full-year programme (as stipulated by Studylink as full-time), within the criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may not be held in conjunction with other University awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
