Malthus Classics Scholarship
Purpose
This scholarship was established to encourage students to continue their studies in Classics.
Who is eligible?
- Applicants must be current full-time students at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be majoring in Classical Studies, Latin, or Greek.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in their second or third year of undergraduate study, or studying towards an Honours degree in one of the above subjects.
Selection criteria
The scholarship is open to full-time students majoring in Classical Studies, and/or Latin, and/or Greek, who intend to enrol in their second or third year of an undergraduate degree, or in the first year of an Honours degree, in Classics, Latin, or Greek, at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic merit and their passion for the subject. Financial hardship will be taken into secondary consideration when choosing a recipient. Applicants may be domestic or international students.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- Applicants should submit a personal statement detailing their passion and enthusiasm for Classics, and outlining the impact that the scholarship will have on them.
- Applicants intending to enrol in an Honours degree should provide an overview of their proposed thesis.
- Complete the Financial Information section in the application.
Selection process
The successful applicant will be selected by members of academic staff, (usually the Programme Director for Classics, or their nominee, and the Head of School, or their nominee).
Should there be difficulty in deciding on the recipient, applicants may be invited to an interview.
Additional information
Students are asked to write a letter of thanks to the donor at the outset of their scholarship, and to share an essay they have produced during the tenure of the scholarship at the end of the year.
The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and will be paid towards the recipient's tuition fees.
Conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
