History and Purpose

This scholarship is funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand as part of Professor Nikki Hessell’s Marsden project on settler treaty-making and English poetry. . Its purpose is to fund Masters theses that will complement the main project.

This scholarship is for a MA student to work on a thesis in English Literature, focused on at least one of the following sub-fields:

  • British eighteenth-century and/or Romantic poetry
  • Settler colonialism and Indigenous sovereignty

Who is eligible?

Applicants must have a completed Honours qualification or equivalent.

Selection criteria

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, the quality of the proposed thesis research, and its relevance to the Marsden project to which it will contribute.

Scholarship specific documentation

Applications should include the following information:

  • One academic reference
  • CV
  • A one-page description of the proposed thesis project, with a bibliography of up to three pages
  • A personal statement about why the applicant wishes to research this topic

Selection process

The successful applicant will be selected by Professor Nikki Hessell.

Additional information

  • The stipend will be paid to the student as monthly payments.
  • The tuition fees + levies will be paid to the university directly.

Conditions

The successful applicant will need to be admitted to the MA in English.
