History and purpose

This scholarship is funded by Kāhui Legal and Taihonoa at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. It is intended to encourage and financially support the successful pursuit of tertiary qualifications and leadership development for Kāhui Legal.

The Kāhui Legal Excellence Scholarship is offered to help offset tuition fees or other course-related costs for a student who has demonstrated academic excellence in their first year of study.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must:

  • be enrolled fulltime in the second year of studies at Te Herenga Waka
  • whakapapa as Māori

Selection criteria

Selection is based on merit and quality of application. Preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled in te reo Māori, tikanga Māori or courses that are inclusive of a mātauranga Māori world view.

Application process

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • A personal statement introducing the applicant to the Grants Committee, including commitment to “give back” to Kāhui Legal in the future and how they intend to do so.
  • A written and signed reference from a non-direct whānau source that speaks to the applicant’s suitability for the scholarship. The referee must state their relationship to the applicant (for example, a former school dean or teacher, sports coach, church or cultural/marae/iwi leader, or employer) and outline the skills, talents, or personal qualities they have observed (to be requested via the online application).

Selection process

The scholarship decision is made by Kahui Legal and the Pouhere of the Office of DVC Māori and Kaitiakitanga or a nominee.

Additional information

The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and will be a contribution towards fees or other course related costs. This is a one-year tenure and successful recipients are eligible to reapply.

The scholarship will be paid in one instalment and cease, should a student end full-time study. Scholarship recipients are strongly encouraged to contribute positively to the University marae, by volunteering some time to support the role and function of supporting the Māori community at Te Herenga Waka.

Conditions

  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
