Deane Orchestral Studies Scholarship
History and purpose
The Deane Endowment Trust has a long-standing commitment to music and education in Aotearoa New Zealand, including significant contributions to both the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and Te Kōkī—New Zealand School of Music (NZSM). The Deane Orchestral Studies Scholarship builds on this legacy by strengthening the partnership NZSO and NZSM through a specific Master's programme and supporting their shared vision of developing a National Music Centre.
The purpose of this scholarship is to foster the careers of exceptionally talented musicians who have demonstrated both outstanding performance ability and a strong commitment to a professional career in orchestral performance.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must:
- have completed an undergraduate degree in performance, with a GPA of at least of 7.0, at Te Tōkī—New Zealand School of Music or another New Zealand university on an orchestral instrument, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience
- have applied for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Practice (MFA (CP)) at NZSM by the closing date of the scholarship
- be residing in Wellington for the duration of their studies
- be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Selection is based on demonstrated outstanding performance ability and a strong commitment to pursuing a career in orchestral performance.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- A personal statement outlining career aspirations and goals, and providing evidence of outstanding performance ability and achievement in orchestral music.
Selection process
The recipient will be selected by a committee convened by Te Kōkī—New Zealand School of Music, including representative(s) from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Applicants may be required to attend an interview and audition.
Additional information
The scholarship will be paid towards the recipient's tuition fees with any remaining funds paid directly to the recipient.
The recipient must write a letter of thanks to the donor upon acceptance of the scholarship.
The recipient is also expected to demonstrate engagement with, and contribute to, the New Zealand School of Music community. Such contributions may include participation in ensembles, presentations, performances, and other NZSM or University activities and events.
Conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
