Autism New Zealand Master’s Scholarship
History and purpose
This scholarship has been established by a gift from Autism New Zealand to further its mission to empower the autistic and wider autism communities.
The scholarship is designed to support Education and Educational Psychology Master’s by thesis students to undertake research evaluating early support for Autistic children.
Who is eligible?
- Eligible applicants must be enrolled or intending to enrol to study an Education or Educational Psychology Master's by thesis in Te Pukenga Wai – The Faculty of Education, Health, and Psychological Sciences.
- Eligible applicants must be researching a topic relating to early autism support.
- New Zealand Citizens, Permanent Residents and International students are eligible to apply.
Selection criteria
Selection will be based on academic merit, the strength of the applicant's accepted research proposal and confirmed supervision arrangements, and the relevance of their research topic to supporting autistic children in New Zealand.
How do students apply?
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
A personal statement that states the applicant’s interest in applying for the scholarship and details of the proposed research.
Decision makers
The Research Supervisor will recommend a preferred candidate and then approved by the Dean FEHPS or nominee.
Additional information
The course fees portion of the scholarship will be paid directly once enrolment has been confirmed. The stipend will be paid in equal instalments over the duration of the programme.
The approximate value of the scholarship for the two eligible programmes is:
- Master of Education: $16,739 (full programme fees) plus a $15,000 stipend paid over three trimesters.
- Master of Educational Psychology: $23,922 (full programme fees) plus a $20,000 stipend paid over four trimesters.
Recipients will be asked to write a letter of appreciation upon receiving the scholarship and to provide a progress report towards the end of their master's study. They will also be asked to share a copy of their completed thesis with the donor.
Conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
