Description

The Scholarship was established to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Māori Studies at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington.  It acknowledges Te Kawa Māui’s continued commitment to providing opportunities for Māori students to learn about Māori culture and society, explore Māori customs, history and traditions and practice how to participate in the Māori world.

The Scholarship is for Māori students who successfully complete the Tohu Māoritanga/Diploma of Māoritanga qualification and are returning to move into undergraduate study at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington.

This Scholarship is sponsored by the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori).

Who is eligible?

Applicants must:

  • Be of Māori descent.
  • Have completed the Tohu Māoritanga programme post 2022.
  • Have applied for an undergraduate degree programme at the University.

Award process

Students are not required to make application.

Once results are published for student results for Tohu Māoritanga course, the successful students will be notified by the Scholarships Office of their award and be advised of the next steps.

Selection process

Selection will be made by a panel made up of representatives from Te Kawa a Māui and the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori).

Additional information

The Scholarship will be paid towards tuition fees and course related costs once Scholarship recipients are fully enrolled at the University.

Regulations and conditions

  1. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  2. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  3. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  4. Should the recipient withdraw from the University during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  5. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested. At the discretion of the Pouhere, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
