Janet Holmes Prize
Information
This prize was established in 2026 using funds donated by Professor Janet Holmes, via the Victoria University Foundation. This prize replaced the Sociolinguistics Prize and the Discourse Analysis Prize, which were awarded in alternating years between 2014-2025. The purpose of this prize is to encourage students interested in sociolinguistics at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington to complete a major in Language Sciences and to then continue to postgraduate study. It recognises the top student in Languages in the Life of Aotearoa New Zealand and Asia-Pacific (LSCI 210) in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies.
The prize is awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School for the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies in consultation with the Course Co-ordinator(s) of LSCI 210.
One prize is given every year. If in any year there is no suitable recipient of the prize, the funds may be used in a subsequent year.
Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded to the donor.
