2024 New Year Honours recognise University alumni

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington is pleased to highlight the achievements of members of our community who have received honours in the 2024 New Year Honours list.

Alumni across a variety of disciplines have been recognised, notably in the fields of education, public service and community. Amongst them is celebrated children’s author David Hill, te reo Māori and education advocate Dr Hana O’Regan, and disability rights champion Paul Gibson.

An honour awarded to very few, The Right Honourable Trevor Colin Mallard, who graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration, has been made Knight Companion of New Zealand Order of Merit for his services as a Member of Parliament and as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Current senior lecturer Dr Cherie Chu-Fulufiga has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to education, and the University’s Pro-Chancellor The Honourable Maryan Street has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services as a Member of Parliament and to human and democratic rights.
