Celebrating this trimester’s Manaaki New Zealand scholarship graduates

Seven Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington students were celebrated at a completion ceremony in May.

A group of graduates in full regalia.

The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships programme is operated by Education New Zealand and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The goal of the scholarships is to create future industry leaders throughout the 119 developing countries that participate.

This year’s graduates were from Malaysia, Botswana, Kiribati, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, and Tuvalu, and graduated with a range of qualifications from biomedical science to public policy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Alexandra Grace, a lead adviser in the global development and scholarships division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, encouraged the graduating cohort to use their experiences to help their home countries.

“You don’t just depart Aotearoa New Zealand with a new qualification, you depart with new perspectives, knowledge, skills, attributes, and connection.

“You may be returning home, but as Manaaki New Zealand scholars, you are part of the Aotearoa New Zealand international family.”

Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifika) Hon. Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban acknowledged the tenacity and determination demonstrated by the students in overcoming the challenges of study.

“I know it has been difficult to be away from home and family, but it is worth it—and that’s why we are here to celebrate.

“You will occupy powerful leadership roles, which are about serving, ethics, and good governance—striving for the best for your people. Not only for your countries, but for our world.”

Six students will return to their home countries in the coming month, except Ahmad Nadzri Mohamad who returns home once he completes his PhD in September.

The scholarships cover most of the costs of study including fees, travel, insurance, and a fortnightly living allowance, enabling opportunities for students that otherwise would not have been possible.

Previous graduate Suphisara Chinakkarapong from Thailand says participating in the programme was a privilege.

“For a student like me who lacks financial support from home—it is one of the best in the world.”
