The Most Influential Paper Award was granted for “The Qualitas Corpus: A Curated Collection of Java Code for Empirical Studies.”

This paper was authored by Senior Lecturer Dr Craig Anslow, Associate Professor Jens Dietrich, Adjunct Professor James Noble, Associate Professor Ewan Tempero (University of Auckland), and other researchers from the University of Auckland and Swinburne University of Technology. The paper was originally published in APSEC 2010 where the paper won a Best Paper Award at that time.

The paper presents a large corpus of Java software intended to reduce the cost of performing large empirical studies of code and to support the comparison of measurements of similar artifacts.

The research has shaped numerous studies in the field and is currently cited by over 520 other research works in the field (according to Google Scholar).

Dr Craig Anslow says that receiving the award is significant for the authors.

“It is a great honour to receive acknowledgement of our research ideas from our peers. We were one of the first research groups in the world to study software artefacts using a corpora approach.

“Subsequently a whole field has emerged conducting similar kinds of research most notably the conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR) that is co-located with the premier IEEE/ACM international Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) conference.”

APSEC is a leading regional forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to exchange knowledge and best practices in software engineering and to address emerging challenges and solutions in software engineering innovation. The 2023 conference was held in Seoul, South Korea.
