Associate Professor Christian Schott

Introduction

Christian is Associate Professor in Tourism Management and at faculty level holds the role of Chair of the Principles of Responsible Management Education (UNPRME) Steering Committee.

Christian's research interests cover three broad areas. Firstly, he is interested in sustainable tourism development and tourism’s interrelationship with climate change. This area of work has seen him engaged in research projects in the Sub-Antarctic, South America, the Pacific and New Zealand. Secondly, he studies the ‘youth’ life stage in the context of travel, exploring aspects such as self-development of young travellers and long-term youth mobility practices in different cultures; this has led to fieldwork in Central America, South East Asia and Europe. Christian’s third research interest evolved from merging the above two research themes by developing a strong interest in education for sustainability. This includes a strong research interest in pedagogies for sustainability as well as a passion for research-driven teaching innovation which has seen him teach Sustainable Tourism Development in Canada and Vanuatu.

A research-driven VR-for-sustainability project he leads was awarded AACSB’s prestigious ‘2018 Innovations that Inspire’ honour, selected for EFMD’s ‘Ideas that Inspire’ Plenary at the 2018 Annual Conference, and recently won the highly competitive Bronze Award Oceania Region at the QS Reimagine Education Awards 2019 in London.

Christian serves on the editorial boards of four tourism journals and was awarded Research Article of the Year 2018 in Tourism Recreation Research with Sochea Nhem.
