Sedimentology and Palaeontology field trip to Rewa Hill

The Sedimentology and Palaeontology course (ESCI 202) went on a field trip to Rewa Hill and Whanganui on 2-3 April. The students learnt how to measure and describe sedimentary rocks that had been formed in the Whanganui Basin.

The students saw many text book examples of sedimentary features exposed on the roadside outcrops at Rewa Hill.

The class also visited Castlecliff Beach where the students produced a stratigraphic column of the strata exposed in the coastal bluffs. They also collected samples of fossils to take back to the lab. These samples will form the basis of a macropaleontology project in class.

The trip was enjoyed by all and will be running again next year.
