Digital Media Lab Boosts New Programme

Victoria University’s new programme in Digital Media Design was given a substantial boost with the opening of a state-of-the-art digital studio at Te Aro Campus.

The Digital Media Design Lab, part of the School of Design, complements the establishment of the Digital Media major in the Bachelor of Design programme.

Head of School, Professor Roy Fleetwood, says the new studio means students undertaking the new programme will be working with the latest technology.

“The new Digital Media Design Lab creates a 21st Century experimental laboratory and think-tank, with access to the latest range of software and hardware required to actively engage in interactive and immersive methods of communication and research.

“We’ve also installed the largest professional AVID editing educational suite in New Zealand to enable the programme to examine design in the context of cinema and cinematic communication processes in the information age. The foundation of film industry skill sets and combination of interactive experience design use will provide students with international job opportunities in the growing design-led entertainment industries.”

Professor Fleetwood says digital media is of growing importance in the education of the next generation of designers.

“The new lab will allow the University, the School of Design and Digital Media Design Programme to forge links with a wide variety of digital media industries in New Zealand and internationally.

“The programme is fully enrolled and we expect to see rapid growth in the coming years. The programme’s goal is provide a resonant environment for interactive learning that builds bridges to Victoria’s existing degrees in film, media studies, sonic arts and other professional disciplines.”
