About

Kia ora!

I’m Jay, and I’m a Registered Social Worker in New Zealand. I identify as an American, queer, cis male (he/him). I was born in California, raised between Arkansas and various parts of Europe, and then moved to Texas as a young adult where I began my career in mental health. In 2023, I completed the final field placement for my Masters of Clinical Social Work here at Mauri Ora. I loved New Zealand so much that I decided to stay here once I’d graduated, and I loved the work and my colleagues here at Mauri Ora so much that I joined the team again as soon as I could.

I have experience providing behavioural therapy to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities; counselling, case management, crisis intervention, and psychosocial rehabilitation to adults diagnosed with severe mental illnesses, personality disorders, and substance use disorders; and care management and counselling to aging adults experiencing late-life decline. Among some other fun highlights, I’ve also been a group co-facilitator for LGBTQIA+ teens and a sexual and relational health educator for middle schoolers.

I care passionately about engaging difference and diversity in practice, especially across spectra of culture, disability, gender, sexuality, and life stage. My therapeutic approach is based in trauma-informed and person-centred care, heavily centres attachment and relational theories, and incorporates cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, existential therapy, and narrative therapy.

In my spare time, I love growing plants, petting cats, planning my next D&D campaign, and playing far too many video games.
