A visit to an impoverished school was the highlight for many of the Victoria Master of Business Administration (MBA) students who recently returned from a study tour to India.

To learn about the value of corporate social responsibility, the students visited the South Indian town of Thodupuzha in Kerala, where they spent a day tiling a classroom and teaching the children about New Zealand including English, rugby haka and poi.

During the nine-day trip, the 27 students visited a number of businesses and tertiary institutions around the country, where they learned about tourism in Kerala, the growth of India’s IT industry, management education, manufacturing, and banking systems in India.

"India has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world for the past two decades," says Dr Arun Elias, MBA Director.

"It is becoming an important region for New Zealand's future."

Students were exposed to the best and worst of India, he says.

"India is a land of contradictions. Students experienced both sides; from the richest institutions and people, to the poorest schools and slums."

The annual Victoria MBA international study tour aims to advance understanding of global business practices, enrich student experience of people and cultures overseas, and to build global connections and networks. This is the first time the tour has been held in India.
