Professor Euan Smith has been made an Emeritus Professor. Professor Smith was appointed as a Professor of Geophysics at Victoria in 1994. He was Associate Dean (Research) for six years and Head of School of Earth Sciences for five years.

He has published 59 refereed articles and served the wider community in a variety of roles including serving on Earthquake Commission and Marsden panels and having a wide media involvement as an expert seismologist after the Canterbury earthquakes. The earthquake location algorithm that he developed has been used for over 30 years.

A strong supporter of the Victoria Mentoring programme, Professor Smith has mentored eight staff members as well as informally mentoring numerous geophysicists. He has co-supervised 18 research students in the last three years and co-authored 21 journal articles since 2007 on topics ranging from palaeontology, reproductive toxicology, microseismology, geodesy to seismic hazard analysis. Professor Smith has taught and contributed to 13 undergraduate courses per year for many years.
